Construction and initial performance tests of EVEDA (Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities) Lithium Test Loop (ELTL) were completed and therefore one of the major milestones in the engineering validation toward IFMIF (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility) was accomplished. The ELTL, which holds 2.5-ton Li, is a proto-type of a Li target facility of the IFMIF and is the largest-ever liquid lithium loop in the history of the fusion research.

Detailed nuclear analyses for the latest ITER NB system are required to ensure that NB design conforms to the nuclear regulations for the ITER building and licensing. A variety of nuclear analyses was started for ITER NB system including a tokamak building of 50m $$times$$ 35m $$times$$ 20m and outside the building by using a Monte Carlo code MCNP in 2009. MCNP geometry input data were successfully produced from simplified NB CAD data with the improved GEOMIT code, which automatically converts CAD data to MCNP geometry input data. We have performed calculations of the effective dose rates during DT operation and after shutdown, and activation of the NB components, etc.

This paper presents the conceptual design of a blanket with simplified structure whose interior consists of the mixture of breeder and multiplier pebble bed, cooling tubes and support for them only. Neutronics calculation indicated that the blanket satisfies a self-sufficient production of tritium. An important finding is that little decrease is seen in TBR even when the gap between neighboring blanket modules is as wide as 0.03 m. This means that blanket modules can be arranged with such a significant clearance gap without sacrifice of tritium production. On the other hand, the thickness of blanket housing is important from the viewpoint of safety. The blanket housing may rupture when the cooling pipe in the blanket is tearing, because thickness of structure materials is thin as 22 mm. This thickness is expected to maintain to 8 MPa in the steam pressure. Finally, the blanket housing, and aspect ratio of blanket shape is proposed in consideration of TBR, and engineering problem such as maintenance and manufacture are discussed.

Manufacturing and development of JT-60SA vacuum vessel and divertor

The JT-60SA vacuum vessel (VV) and divertor are key components for the performance requirements. Therefore the manufacturing and development of VV and divertor are in progress, inclusive of the superconducting magnets. The vacuum vessel has a double wall structure in high rigidity to withstand electromagnetic force at disruption and to keep high toroidal one-turn resistance. In addition, the double wall structure fulfills originally two functions. (1) The remarkable reduction of the nuclear heating in the superconducting magnets is made by boric-acid water circulated in the double wall. (2) The effective baking is enabled by nitrogen gas flow of 200$$^{circ}$$C in the double wall after draining of water. Three welding types were chosen for the manufacturing of the double wall structure VV to minimize deformation by welding. Divertor cassettes with fully water cooled plasma facing components were designed to realize the JT-60SA lower single null closed divertor. The divertor cassettes in the radio-active VV have been developed to ensure compatibility with remote handling (RH) maintenance in order to allow long pulse high performance discharges with high neutron yield. The manufacturing of divertor cassettes with typical accuracy of *1 mm has been successfully completed. Brazed CFC (carbon fiber composite) monoblock targets for a divertor target have been manufactured by precise control of tolerances inside CFC blocks. The infrared thermography test of monoblock targets has been developed as new acceptance inspection.

Test results of ITER conductors in the SULTAN facility

Starting March 2007, over 60 ITER cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) have been tested in the SULTAN test facility, Switzerland. For the NbTi CICC, the results confirm the prediction from the strand data, which are made taking the peak field over the conductor cross section as operating field. All the NbTi samples passed the supplier qualification phase. For the Nb$$_{3}$$Sn CICC, the performance prediction is not straightforward because of the irreversible degradation caused by filament damage occurring during cyclic loading. At the first run of the test campaign, the performance of all the Nb$$_{3}$$Sn samples largely meets the target for all the tested samples. Contrary to the NbTi CICC case, the n-index of the transition is substantially lower than in the strands, providing evidence of irreversible degradation. The performance loss upon load cycles and thermal cycles has a broad range among the various conductor samples.

The ITER organization and 6 Domestic Agencies (DA) have been implementing the construction of ITER superconducting magnet systems. Four DAs have already started full scale construction of Toroidal Field (TF) coil conductors. The qualification of the radial plate manufacture has been completed, and JA and EU are ready for full scale construction. JA has qualified full manufacturing processes of the winding pack with a 1/3 prototype and made 2 full scale mock-ups of the basic segments of TF coil structure to optimize and industrialize the manufacturing process. Preparation and qualification of the full scale construction of the TF coil winding is underway by EU. Procurement of the manufacturing equipment is near completion and qualification of manufacturing processes has already started. The constructions of other components of the ITER magnet systems are also going well towards the main goal of the first plasma in 2020.

Effects of plasma toroidal rotation are self-consistently taken into account not only in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability analysis but also in the equilibrium calculation. To study the effects of toroidal rotation on resistive wall modes (RWMs), a new code has been developed. The RWMaC modules, which solve the electromagnetic dynamics in vacuum and the resistive wall, have been implemented in the MINERVA code, which solves the Frieman-Rotenberg equation that describes the linear ideal MHD in a rotating plasma. It is shown for the first time that MHD equilibrium change induced by toroidal rotation significantly reduces the growth rates of RWMs. Moreover, it can open the stable window which does not exist under the assumption that the rotation affects only the linear dynamics. The rotation modifies the equilibrium pressure, current density, and mass density profiles, which results in the change of the potential energy including rotational effects.

Development of ITER equatorial EC launcher

The ITER equatorial EC launcher is making a large technology to injecting $$geq$$20 M and CW operation. The design of the shield blanket structure that tolerates thermal and electromagnetic load is attained. The port plug structure considering the fabrication process applying HIP and TIG-welding are designed. The mm-wave design that enables to guide the wave power of $$geq$$20 MW into plasma with toroidal steering capability of 20$$^{circ}$$ $$sim$$ 40$$^{circ}$$ and efficiency of 98.4 $$sim$$ 99% assuming HE11 fundamental wave mode + TEM000 gaussian mode are proceeded. Reduction of the heat load to 2.1 MW/m$$^{2}$$ on the steering mirror are attained. These results allow the transmission of 2.0 MW per a waveguide and the required radiation profile from the launcher. The full scale mock-up of the mm-wave launching system consisting of the waveguides and the mirrors and the subcomponents such as the steering mechanism of the mirror, the cooling water lines and etc., are fabricated to investigate the design availability. High power (0.5 MW) experiment of the mock-up confirmed the expected wave beam propagation and steering capability of 20$$^{circ}$$ $$sim$$ 40$$^{circ}$$. The mock-up of the shield blanket module and the partial mock-up of the port plug structure are fabricated based on the present design to investigate the manufacturability and the performance of the cooling water flow. The results will reflect back to the fabrication design of the structural components of the equatorial launcher.

Progress of manufacturing and quality testing of the ITER divertor outer vertical target in Japan

The outer vertical targets of the ITER divertor are procured by the Japan Domestic Agency, JADA. Manufacturing a full-scale prototype of the half cassette which consists of 11 plasma facing units and a steel support structure has been started in Japan. JADA has greatly improved the success rate of the joint between the plasma-facing materials and heat-sink materials, in consequence of R&D on joint technology and quality control. JADA solved problems of quality control of the joint interface by an improved system of infrared thermography inspection, which provides quick feedback during the manufacturing process about the presence of defect in the joint. This paper reports on the achievements and the clarifications of technical and quality issues for the manufacture of the divertor components to be supplied by Japan.

Dependence of heat transport on isotopic composition is investigated in conventional H-mode plasmas for the application to ITER. The identical profiles of $$n_mathrm{e}$$, $$T_mathrm{e}$$ and $$T_mathrm{i}$$ are obtained for hydrogen and deuterium plasmas while the required power becomes clearly larger for hydrogen, resulting in the reduction of the heat diffusivity for deuterium. The result of the identical temperature profiles in spite of different heating power suggests that the characteristics of heat conduction differs essentially between hydrogen and deuterium even at the same scale length of temperature gradient. On the other hand, the edge stability is improved by increased total $$beta_mathrm{p}$$ regardless of the difference of the isotropic composition.

This paper mainly focuses on a sector transport maintenance scheme from the aspects of high plant availability. This design study clarifies critical design factors and key engineering issues on the maintenance scheme, that is, (1) how to support an enormous turnover force of the toroidal field (TF) coils in the large open port for sector transport and (2) the transferring mechanism of sector in the vacuum vessel. In addition, maintenance scenario under the high decay heat is proposed for the first time.
